Technology Background of our Chairman

Lew C. Schon, MD, FACS, our Chairman has been an active researcher in the therapeutic uses of stem cells and growth factors in orthopedic surgery.  He has been the principal or co-principal investigator on numerous grants and is well-published in the field.

Lew C. Schon, MD, FACS – Recent funded research in the arena of orthobiologics and specifically, stem cells and growth factors

1. Schon (PI) 6/09- 12/10
High Density Nanofilms for Orthopaedic Therapies
The objective is to develop nanofilms with specific affinity to stem or other biological cells of interest for in-surgery application to a wide array of prosthetic implants as well as to bone grafts.
Sponsor: 2009 Maryland Nanobiotechnology Research and Industry Competition Grants – Maryland DBED
Role: Primary Investigator
2. Schon (Co-Investigator) 4/08- 4/09
Bone and tendon healing mechanisms of mesenchymal stem cells and hematopoetic progenitors derived from human adult bone marrow
The objective is to define the role of hmsc and hhsc in healing tendinopathy and bone non-unions. By identifying the molecular mediators more effective treatments can be established
Sponsor: Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund
Role: Co-Investigator
3. Schon (PI) 4/05/07 -5/01/08
Quantitative and Qualitative Description: Effects of Bone Marrow Derived Growth Factors and Cytokines on Autogenous Mesenchymal Stem Cells of Various Aspiration Sites
The objective is to advance the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the acceleration of bone healing by growth factors and cytokines from bone marrow derived platelet rich plasma (PRP) and mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow aspirate.
Sponsor: AOFAS
Role: Primary Investigator
4. Schon (P) 7/01/06 – 7/01/08
Inflammatory cytokine expression in degenerative tendinosis: quantitative description and relation to whole-tendon mechanical stimuli
The objectives of this study are designed to characterize gene expression in matched pairs of normal and disease tendon tissue and study tenocyte cell responsiveness to treatment with specific growth factors.
Sponsors – AOFAS, Medstar Research Institute
Role: Primary Investigator
5. Schon (PI) 7/01/07 – 7/01/08
In Vitro Response of Normal and Diseased Tenocytes to PDGF-BB
To characterize the differential response among injured tendons to PDGF-BB.
Sponsor – Biomimetics
Role: Primary Investigator
6. Schon (co-PI) 7/01/06 – 12/22/08
The effect of rh PDGF in foot and ankle Fusions: a pivotal FDA clinical trial
This is a randomized prospective multicenter surgical trial comparing rh pdgf vs autograft bone as an adjuvant for hindfoot and ankle fusions
Sponsors – Biomimetics
Role: Co- Investigator
